2 December: 213 Greenwich High Road

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

213 Greenwich High Road

Greenwich, SE10 8NB

The Christmas tree is one of the most enduring and iconic images of Christmas.

It is believed that the preacher Martin Luther was the first person to bring a Christmas tree into a home in the way we know it today. One night before Christmas, he was walking through the forest and saw stars shining through the tree branches. He went home and told his children how beautiful it was and how it reminded him of Jesus, who left the stars of heaven to come to earth at Christmas.

Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III, erected the first known Christmas tree in England in 1800 at the Queen’s Lodge, Windsor. Prince Albert, who is wrongly credited with introducing the Christmas tree to this country, certainly contributed to its popularity after a illustration of the tree in Windsor Castle was featured in 1848 in the Illustrated London News. Its popularity grew from that time.

We wish you a very happy Christmas (featuring your own Christmas tree, of course) and a joyful 2018 for all.

The window is best photographed during the day, but can be viewed at any time.

The window will be ready by 4 p.m. on 2 December.
